Speech To Text App Review Using Tech
I have tested this app, which promises to handle speech recognition and convert it into text. The app is available on the Google Play Store and is also accessible on IOS. It can also be downloaded as an extension for Google Chrome, allowing you to fill in text fields with your voice on the Google Chrome browser. I haven't tested this feature.
I tested it in Danish. Danish is a relatively small language compared to English, so I was curious to see, if it could recognize my Danish pronunciation and expressions. It did so fully. There were a few errors, but they mainly occurred, when my mobile phone's screen locked, causing the recording of my spoken language to stop. Therefore, it's a good idea to disable the screen lock while using the app. I tested it on my mobile phone, which is a Xiaomi Note 10.
I dictated a longer story, and the app willingly wrote the entire text.
But first, about the installation: it was quick and easy from the Google Play Store. I didn't have to log in to use the app. Upon starting the app a prompt appeared asking, if you wanted a slightly improved Beta version, and I chosed that from the beginning. Then I came to this screen:
In the upper right corner, it is seen, that it is set to "listen" for Danish: DA-DK. In the lower right corner, under a not very noticeable advertisement, there is a green microphone button. It starts the recording — I was surprised, that it wrote the words, I said, and it almost went into "pause", when I needed a moment to think and formulate the next sentence in my head. When I continued speaking, it immediately started writing again.
Speech To Text App The Menues
The menu on the left shows all the options in the app. Note that in Translation Mode, you can switch between Speech to Text and Text to Speech; the app can read aloud, what you just wrote! The voice is AI-inflected and without intonation. You might get a bit tired of listening to it! If you press "Summary," you get a tally of the number of characters and words in the text as a small prompt in the middle of the screen.
The menu on the right gives you the option to start a new note, open a saved note, save your text, rename, delete, and restore a deleted note.
However, I haven't tried the last one. Additionally, you can get tips on using the app.
Let me go back to the left menu again, this time to look at "Settings." Here are the parameters that can be changed, and at the bottom, you get a preview of what could be done additionally if you had purchased the paid version of the app.
I am satisfied with the features offered by the non-paid version; see "Premium features" in the image above. At the moment, I don't wish to pay for the app.
When I finished dictating my text, I just had to press "Send," and I chose to send my text to my computer via Bluetooth, where it was saved as a "text-file" and could be opened and worked on immediately.
Overall, I think the app is excellent and a useful tool for recording speech to text, with very few misspellings of words. It responds quickly and easily on my mobile phone. A helpful assistant when you, as a writer, need to jot down a passage, because you've had a brilliant idea in the middle of a supermarket parking lot, or wherever inspiration may strike. I can only recommend other writers to try it and see, if it could also be a helpful tool for them.
